To build a house, the geologist inspects and drills into soil beds to see how well the earth can hold foundation: concrete, steel, grout; hurt, distance, unmet expectations. How does the feeling of brokenness live in the drywall of a house? How do we learn to forgive our parents for the wood of the family tree? And is it possible or necessary to leave our past behind if we want to heal? How to Build a Home is a story of learning how to create a life for yourself when you’ve come from a broken home, and how broken stories move within our bodies for generations. It begs us to ask ourselves: how did I end up here? What do I do with the traumas of the past? And how do we truly build a home for ourselves out of the wreckage?

The first iteration of this show was created and performed at The Banff Centre (2014 – Spoken word Residency) and instalments have been presented across Canada. This would be the first full-length version of this show. This play reading will be followed by a talkback with the playwright/performer.

This show is part of Intrepid Theatre's OUTstages Festival (Feb 8-16, 2020). See [intrepidtheatre.com] for details.
